Garden History

InĀ 1995 there was no garden at Ashton except for a few mature trees and the wall around what is now the focal part of the garden. The house had been re-possessed and was boarded up and the grounds around the house were completely overgrown with brambles and nettles. Apart from the walled garden there were no real boundaries and so over the years these have been pushed out and extended and the garden has become larger and larger. The latest addition has been the new drive and the meadows and woodland to either side.

The first job was to clear and burn all the rubbish starting in the walled garden. Over the years we have worked on the garden piece by piece adding and extending as we could afford to, both in time and money! Every year we have a new project and the garden is constantly evolving and changing.

In June 2007 we opened the garden to the public for the first time with great success in spite of the poor weather and hope to do so in years to come. There is plenty to see and there is a tranquillity that is hard to beat. Maybe something to do with the close proximity of Maiden Castle!

The garden will be open again in 2008 with the National Garden Scheme.
